SENIOR EMBEDDED SYSTEM DESIGN ENGINEER

JOB TYPE: Full-Time

LOCATION: South Africa, Somerset West

REPORT TO: Design Lead

KEY PURPOSE OF JOB
Product development and manufacturing aerospace engineering company in Somerset West has a permanent position for an embedded design engineer to assist in the development and verification of advanced satellite communication systems within a multidisciplinary team.

KEY TASKS

The Senior Embedded System Design Engineer will be responsible for implementing functionalities such as DSP algorithms and communication protocols, high-speed interface protocols, and networking protocols in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs):

• Develop all aspects of an embedded system implementation, including firmware development, simulation, high-speed digital design and layout, and functional and environmental testing.
• Research, develop and testing of theoretical and conceptual designs.
• Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to derive and define engineering requirements based on system-level requirements.
• Create formal engineering documentation such as specifications, test procedures, design reports, and production documentation.
• Work with the Industrialization, Production, and Quality departments to bring up production and resolve manufacturing issues.
• Attending requirement and proposal discussions with clients when required. • Other ad-hoc duties as required by company.

PREREQUISITES QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCES

Qualifications:
• B.Sc/B.Eng degree in Electronic Engineering from a recognized institution.

Experience (ideally within aerospace or defence industry):
• FPGA development (VHDL preferred) (>8 years)
• High-reliability electronic product design and realization
(>5-7 years)
• Analog and digital electronic circuit design and simulation (>8 years)
• Practical experience testing and debugging electronic circuits (>8 years)


Additional knowledge areas that would strengthen the application.
• Master’s Degree
• High-speed digital design, schematic capture and PCB layout (preferably in Altium Designer)
• Software development (C, C++, Python)
• Experience modelling DSP algorithms (FFT, filters) and communication waveforms in MATLAB / Python / etc.
• Experience with architecture and design of communications systems.
• Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills.
